Sudan-born beauty Ajak Deng is adorned with pulsating bracelets, necklaces and knuckleduster rings from revered houses Bulgari, Fabergé, Louis Vuitton and Dior in filmmaker Marcus Tomlinson’s cosmic short. A rising star in the modeling world, Deng has graced the cover of i-D magazine, the pages of Italian Vogue, and was recently announced as a new face for MAC Cosmetics. While capturing the energy and light resonating from Deng and the jewels, which were styled by AnOther Magazine's fashion editor Agata Belcen, Tomlinson also recorded the sounds the jewelry made during filming and incorporated them into the final soundscape. “When you give someone a piece of jewelry, the vibration that you are passing on is also part of that gift,” explains Tomlinson. “It’s not just a lump of gleaming metal and stone, it’s what you put into it when you give it that resonates and makes it treasured.” Best known for short films and commercials for thought-provoking designers including Issey Miyake, Hussein Chalayan and Gareth Pugh, Tomlinson eschews the traditional tools of pencil and paper when coming up with new ideas, and instead gets inspired by doing. “I believe imagination is created for us," he says. "I make experiments with light and find the idea inside the camera.”

I am a huge fan of fashion illustration. Carol Woolton's book, Drawing Jewels for Fashion, is an absolute gem!! It is the first book I have ever seen that focuses solely on the art of illustration of jewelry design.

In Woolton's introduction she writes, "For some time I have wanted to explore contemporary jewellery design, to chart designers' inspirations as well as their relationship with the art of drawing from the first original sketch to the finished sculpted objet. The perfect jewel creates a physical as well as an emotional response, and this response is engineered by the creative process of a jewellery designer. Every drawing depicts individual designer's lines, styles and forms as well as their personal influences. Each jeweller uses their own unique aesthetic to explore the world around us, whether the natural world, art, architecture, culture, literature, symbolism, or history and ancient civilisations."

Woolton is not only successful in her exploration, but she surpasses her vision for her book. This book is one of the most inspiring I have seen in a long time. I have seen many vintage illustrations of jewelry design but was naive to the fact that drawing jewels for fashion was still a thriving art.

Woolton's book features work from some of my most favorite jewelry designers: Sevan Bicakci, Lydia Courteille, Stephen Webster, Victoire de Castellane, Delfina Delettrez, Shaun Leane, and introduces me to many more inspiring designers that I did not know about. For every designer, there are illustrations paired with the finished designs.

"Inspired by a visit to the Silk Museum in Macclesfield, I was drawn to the old tools that were used to print the textiles. Within my development I wanted to see how pattern could be formed into a 3D aspect rather than a flat continuation.

I created my own silk pattern using computer software and then used this to laser cut the image into acrylic. The pieces also contain hand pierced aluminium that has been hand moulded to create sphere like structures."

Foscarini Planet: Inspired by NASA

Planet, a spherical textile lamp, was inspired by a study commissioned by NASA (carried out by Dainese in partnership with MIT) on high performance “intelligent” clothing worn by astronauts. Stitching, applied to the surface of a spacesuit material made it adhere to the body, stopping it from expanding in the absence of gravity, yet was flexible for body movement. A similar idea involving thread treated at high temperature was developed by Foscarini in collaboration with Changedesign to develop the form of Planet so that it hardens into an exoskeleton to support the lamp’s shape.

Today on the British Vogue blog, there is a post on Christian Lacroix's costumes for the Paris Ballet National. I really miss Lacroix terribly. I am glad he has been busy; collaborating with Desigual, designing furniture, illustrating a fairy tale, and now, costuming "La Source".

Yes, I am glad Lacroix has been busy, but no matter what he is doing, there is still a void in the fashion world that he once filled. (There is also another void created just recently at Dior. Bring back Lacroix! hint, hint LVMH!).

Each year for the past eight years, the Design Challenge theme is chosen by the Design Los Angeles Board of Directors. The board is made up of a dozen design studio executives. Automotive design studios from around the world are invited to participate and this year, studios from Germany, Japan and the U.S. competed to design “Hollywood’s Hottest New Movie Car.”

Entries are judged based on various factors including: how the vehicle reflects its brand attributes relative to the movie plot; how the vehicle relates to the targeted audience or brand; the level of imagination; the character development of the vehicle; and the uniqueness of the combination of story, car and character.

In a world of continuous change, in Cantpark City, reporter Annie Angle is beginning a new chapter in her life. Cantpark City is famous for its friendly people, the beautiful weather, but notoriously known for a lack of parking spaces. On an early Sunday morning, an article in a newspaper catches Annie’s eyes… “Smart Granny Robots missing!!!”
Annie sets off on a journey to solve the mystery of the missing Grannies and to earn her first, potentially career-making, front page news article. Her Smart 341 Parkour vehicle plays a key role in this private investigation, providing both effective transportation and favourable sleuthing capabilities.
Several features enable her to take pictures from the best possible locations. The large greenhouse gives Annie 360 degrees of visibility while travelling through the inner city. The wheels are retractable and contain impulse pads and vacuum cups. The hexagon skin around the wheelhouse is adjustable to release the wheels. The Smart has different modes: a typical drive mode, a fly mode that allows the vehicle to hover far above the streets and a climb mode that allows the vehicle to run up the walls of skyscrapers.

What impresses me about this collaboration, is that it is a complete brand launch-no preview; a finished product from clothing design to web design. I feel that the brand's vision is clearly expressed with the website and Tumblr blog. Even the mannequin is branded!

I find the images on Tumblr incredibly inspiring.

The collection is well edited and the clothes themselves extremely desirable. In fact, I almost want to buy the entire collection! I finally narrowed it down to (more than) a select few.

Style.com Launches Print Magazine

Fairchild Fashion Group, which publishes Women's Wear Daily, is set to launch a new print magazine, Style.com at the end of this month. This new venture was announced back in April of this year, but for some reason, the launch has been kept under the radar until just recently. Considering the impact of social media in marketing, this piques my curiosity. Why would FFG remain so mum about such an event? The Style.com magazine is definitely a departure from the norm; instead of print magazine going digital, the digital site is being launched in print.

Style.com, whose tagline reads "First in Fashion for Ten Years", has been my resource for the latest runway shows and style photos. I am constantly referring to their runway archives, especially when I start to miss Lacroix during the couture shows. I read a large number of fashion and style blogs. On the other hand, I also subscribe to WWD and am addicted to print magazines (I have a huge library of tear sheets from fashion magazines that date back to the 80s).

I am definitely curious! I've ordered my copy and I can't wait to see what's inside!

Her publications include: Jewelry and Metalwork in the Arts & Crafts Tradition and Imperishable Beauty, Art Nouveau Jewelry (co-‐authored with Yvonne Markowitz, Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). Her most recent curatorial project was Jewelers of the Hudson Valley at The Forbes Galleries.

I am a fan of Elyse Zorn Karlin's work. I have a copy of "Imperishable Beauty: Art Nouveau Jewelry" the Museum of Fine Arts publication Karlin co-authored that coincided with the exhibition (sadly, I missed the exhibition).

'The Lullaby' is a collection inspired by Roman Polanski's 'Rosemary's Baby'.
References to the horror film are reflected in the colour palette with dark petrol,
intense fuschia, emerald green and deep burgundy.

The collection is softened with faux fur pom pom hats and fox tail zip handbags in tones of nude and ivory.
The 60s element is prevalent throughout the collection with pea coats, flared trousers, shift dresses and pussy bow collars.
The love heart print is a nod to the dark romance of the film and further accentuates the contrast of emotions it creates.

I was visiting FIT the other day to view The Sporting Life exhibit, and I ran into Christie Rustico just after she had taken down her installation for her graduate project. Actually, I didn't run into Christie, I ran into her painting!

I was so struck by the painting, I had to speak to the artist. Turns out I am not the only one who loved her work on sight. She had sold the rest of her paintings from the show, and this was the only one left! With a dynamic personality and mature talent, Rustico will go far.

Here is Rustico's artist statement:

"Nothing in this world is ever completely perfect, no person is ever perfect nor is a work of art. I am very comfortable with knowing I will never be perfect and I am happy with myself, in my own skin and in my life, but until a few years ago I was unsure of who I was as an artist. I realized once I became comfortable with myself, I became comfortable with my art and was now given the ability to fully express myself. I am a twenty two year old FIT graduate from Broad Channel, New York and I try to portray my personality through my artwork by indicating my sense of humor, and allowing the viewer to know me on a more personal basis.

Everyone close to me has always encouraged me to do what I want my whole life and I feel that they really helped shape me as a person and an artist. I am very family oriented with my own and my boyfriend Cory’s family and they mean the world to me. I am blessed to have these amazing, and crazy people in my family who appreciate the person I am. I am a very silly individual always cracking dirty jokes, poking fun, and excessively using the term "That’s What She Said.", so I thought it would be cool to introduce it into my art since it is such a big part of my life.

My artworks resemble close friends, family members, and myself stuck in ackward situations, who are turned into comic cartoons making vague statements. The characters are created by a very smooth application of acrylic paint and include a great use of line variation. The situations are meant to relate to the viewer and have them reminsince of a time when they’ve been stuck in a similar moment, or remember the feeling of laughing at yourself, I want them to get a laugh out of my paintings. Each painting conceals a sexual innuendo in the vague text bubble, giving the viewer freedom to determine the meaning for themselves."

I had not planned on attending the auction itself as my son was in school at the time. Bill insisted that we attend, that it would be "an historic event". He was right. I recently met Anthony Jacobus through my work in the vintage fashion world. I fell in love with his aesthetic-the way he uses distressed and worn vintage clothing and collectibles in his still lifes. It was really hard to choose which photos to post!!

Armory Arts Week: Moroso: Skyscraper Nursery by Anna Galtarossa

Moroso presents the Moroso Award for Contemporary Art to Italian artist Anna Galtarossa. The Skyscraper Nursery is a fascinating installation of mechanical structures representing buildings of NYC. Each building moves, twirls, inflates and deflates and gyrates in a different way. I heard someone describe the work as "a bunch of children acting up in a nursery". That is exactly what I experienced. Each piece is on a timer and seems to react on it's own internal trigger, just like a child!! I found that the installation did not detract from the furniture display. In fact it seemed to match perfectly in introducing the new Soft Wood designs (as seen in the window shot), with the Soft Wood bench amongst the Galtarossa skyscrapers.

I LOVE the watertowers!

I love how the installation enhances the landscape of the Moroso furniture displays! This skyscraper alternately loses air and fills up again.

Curator Katie Gass has outdone herself with her latest commission as part of the Jumeirah Essex House Artists-in-Residence program. The installation called, "20 Bridges for Central Park" by the NYC based architectural firm of Aranda\Lasch is located front and center in the lobby of the hotel. It features 20 sculptural models of the proposed bridges alongside a handrawn overview of Central Park with the locations of each bridge model pinpointed on the map. Reed Seifer takes texting to a new level by hand-imprinting his message on dollar bills. The works of art are a limited edition of 1000 and are for sale for $25. at the Armory Show, Pier 94, Booth L-21.

"If my Armory booth gets me arrested Paul Morris said he would bail me out," tweets Seifer.

We bought one. It was definitely worth it!

Armory Arts Week: Day 1: Harlem Biennale Armory VIP Preview

This evening we got an amazing exclusive preview of the Harlem Biennale brought to us by the Harlem Biennale team.

Harlem historian Michael Henry Adams led us on a tour of the historic Mount Morris Park neighborhood with stops at three of the local galleries.

Now for the art!!:

Our first gallery stop on the tour was the Renaissance Fine Art gallery (RFA), 2075 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd.:

The tour ended at the renowned Ristorante Settapani for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and a sumptous prix-fixe dinner. The dining experience was amazing! I will definitely go back.

Once again Jill Stuart demonstrates her proficiency with color and fabric which blends perfectly with her bold choice in print. Prior to the start of Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week, the prediction was that designers would be focusing on color. Stuart steps to the forefront with her choices. Looking at the overall palette, the tones are ones seen at the changing of the seasons here on the East Coast, and they blend perfectly. It's as if Stuart has literally pulled the colors from nature and placed them on the runway. In addition, the designer shows mastery in blending various fabrics, not only in different tones, but in different textures.

The result is a highly creative and well edited show. In this, and the Spring 11 collection, it seems as if Stuart has raised the bar for her label. She is definitely living up to that vision. Brava!

This past Saturday, Greg Lauren was on hand at Barneys New York to present his new collection of reconstructed jackets for men and women (fashioned of deconstructed vintage military uniforms, tents, and bags). Each piece is one of a kind and hand sewn by Lauren and his team of artisans. An established artist and actor, Lauren enters into the fashion design market with a mature talent. This collection is proof that no matter what wash, be it acid, stone, or any other, and no matter how many times you run over your new pair of jeans over stones with your tires, you just can't beat the original vintage piece whose patina comes with age and wear and tear. Fantastic!!!
